Former head of the National Assembly of Ecuador demands that the Constitutional Court rule on “cross death”

The former president of the National Assembly (parliament) of Ecuador Virgilio Saquicela demanded this Wednesday an urgent pronouncement from the Constitutional Court on the “cross death” applied by the conservative president William Lassowhich dissolved the Legislature and called for early elections.

Saquicela, in a press conference, indicated that the Constitutional ruling is fundamental, since the application by Lasso of the article 148 of the magna carta, known as “cross death”, would be inapplicable.

Although he said that the legislators, now dismissed by the Government’s measure, will respect the pronouncement of the Constitutional courtinsisted that this pronouncement is required to settle the doubts that have arisen.

Saquicela, visibly upset, said that if the Court decides to suspend the presidential decree, Parliament will resume its work and continue with the political trial of censorship against Lasso, who has been accused of embezzlement (embezzlement) in public companies.

And it is that for the former head of the National AssemblyLasso’s decision to dissolve Parliament could be aimed at avoiding his dismissal, a fact that could have occurred next Saturday in a vote on the motion of no confidence.

Saquicela was of the opinion that the president was surely scared after his appearance on Tuesday in the Assembly, where he presented his argument in defense of the impeachment trial, understanding that the opposition could have added more than the 92 votes (two-thirds of the Chamber) that were required. for your censorship.

In addition, the former legislator insisted that the cause put forward by President Lasso to apply the “cross death” would not be fulfilled, since there is no evidence in the country about a “serious political crisis and internal commotion”.

If the Constitutional Court accepts the president’s argument, the former legislators will accept the ruling and wait for the government to change with the early elections that should take place this year.

The Constitutional Court should rule before the next 48 hours, Saquicela added, considering that this is an important case that calls for the body’s speed.

In addition, he recalled that it was the Constitutional Court itself that admitted the impeachment trial against Lasso, qualifying the case as embezzlement for his interpellation.

On his side, the Social Christian legislator Stephen Torreswho last Sunday was elected second vice president of the Parliamentwent to the Constitutional Court this Wednesday to file a claim of unconstitutionality for the measure applied by Lasso.

Torres also expressed his hope that the Court’s decision will be immediate “to give clarity, certainty (to the country), not only to the political sphere, not only to the citizens, especially to the economy, which has seen this decision as drastic and absolutely unnecessary”.
