Lasso proclaims before the Ecuadorian Congress his “total, evident and unquestionable” innocence

The president of Ecuador, William Lassoalleged Tuesday before the Congress his “total, evident and unquestionable” innocence in the alleged crime of embezzlement for which the leftist opposition is politically prosecuting him with a view to removing him.

“There is no evidence or relevant testimonies. Rather, the only thing that exists is information that proves my total, evident and unquestionable innocencedeclared the right-wing ruler in the hemicycle, in which the opposition majority requires the vote of 92 of the 137 assembly members to approve a motion of no confidence and dismiss him.

The political trial is promoted by several parties such as the one related to the former socialist president Rafael Correa (2007-2017), who leads the opposition to the Lasso government, which he took office in May 2021.

“Those accusers who have wanted to seize power up to four times in two years of my government, those accusers who have been driven by a superhuman rancor, if they were never able to find anything, then it can only be concluded that there is nothing to find absolutely nothinghe added.

Lasso, who has the power to dissolve Parliament to make way for early general elections, pointed out: “The same resentment that they profess against me is the greatest proof of my innocence.”

The president is accused of an alleged embezzlement in the management of the state shipping company Ecuadorian Oil Fleet (Flopec).

According to the complaints, Lasso continued with a contract signed before it took possession for the transportation of crude oil with the international group Amazon Tankerwhich left losses of more than six million dollars.
