Turkey condemns Israeli minister’s visit to Jerusalem Mosques

Türkiye has condemned this Sunday as “clear violation of international law” the visit of the minister Israeli of Homeland Security, the far-right Itamar Ben Gvirto the Esplanade of the Mosques of Jerusalem.

These provocative and fascistoid acts by members of the Israeli Government, challenging the historic status of the Esplanade, are totally unacceptable.”, points out the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Turk in a statement.

We once again call on the Israeli Government to immediately stop all provocative acts and react responsibly”, underlines the note.

Ben Gvir went to the site today accompanied by a delegation that included the head of the Police Israeli and some religious figures, an act considered provocative also by the Palestinian leadership, which had already reacted vehemently when the minister visited the same location in January.

Under the status quo in force since 1967 – when Israel occupied the eastern part of Jerusalemwhere the Esplanade is located- the enclosure is reserved exclusively for the worship of Muslims, while Jews can only enter as visitors.

The site has been in Jordanian custody since 1967 and the Ministry of Religious Affairs of this kingdom is the entity in charge of managing the affairs of the Esplanade of the Mosques and its accesses.

Ben Gvir’s visit to the site takes place days after the controversy March of the Flagsin which thousands of ultranationalist Israeli youth crossed the Muslim neighborhood of the Old City Jerusalem, creating tension with its Palestinian residents.

Türkiye and Israelallies since the founding of the Jewish State in 1948, broke relations in 2010 and after a first reconciliation between 2016 and 2018, aborted due to the escalation of the Palestinian conflict, they exchanged ambassadors again last fall.
