Conservative Mitsotakis wins Greek legislative elections

The Prime Minister of Greece and leader of the conservative new democracy (N.D.), Kyriakos Mitsotakiseasily won the legislative elections held this Sunday, leaving his main rival, the left-wing opposition party, far behind syrizaof Alexis Tsiprasaccording to the first partial results.

After the scrutiny of 61% of the votes, NA obtained 40.8% of the ballots and is more than 20 points ahead of syrizawhich gets 20%, reported the Hellenic Ministry of the Interior.

In third place are the Social Democrats of Pasok-Kinal with 12%, followed by the Communist Party of Greece (7%) and the ultra-right Greek solution (4.5%).

With 2.5%, the leftist party MeRA25of the former Minister of Finance Yanis Varufakis, would be left out of Parliament by not exceeding the 3% threshold required to enter the 300-seat Chamber. Participation stood at 56.1, a percentage almost identical to that of the last elections (2019).

These elections were held with a new proportional system, which places the minimum percentage necessary to win an absolute majority in Parliament at around 45%, a limit that no party has managed to reach.

The Minister of State, the Conservative Yorgos Yerapetritispointed out that the results constitute “a clear order” of the people so that ND government alone.

This augurs that the Greeks will probably have to go to the polls again, foreseeably in July, when the party with the most votes would obtain a prize of up to 50 seats.

But before the new elections are called, the three attempts to form a government by the leaders of the most voted parties must fail, who will obtain, in the coming days, consecutively, the corresponding commission from the country’s president.

These elections, the first that Greece has held in the last thirteen years of economic crisis without being under the strict economic supervision of the European Union (EU), were marked by the increase in the cost of living that worries the Hellenic population.
