Tragedy in Thailand: Seven dead, including four children, when a school roof collapsed

Seven people, including four children, were killed and 18 injured when the metal roof collapsed at a school in thailandthe local authorities reported this Tuesday.

The accident happened on Monday afternoon when a group of people took refuge in the school’s sports grounds. Wat Nern Byin the northern province of Phichit -about 300 kilometers north of Bangkok-, during a storm.

Strong winds ripped off the roof and caused the metal structure to fall, trapping the people who were there, according to photos posted on Facebook by the Regional Department for Disaster Prevention.

The emergency teams began an operation to rescue the victims from the rubble and transfer them to hospitals in the region, where at least four of the injured perished.

For its part, the Meteorological Department of thailand has issued a rain and strong wind alert this week as a result of the official start of the rainy season.
