Scholz ready to reconnect with Putin when ‘the time is right’

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said on Friday he was ready to resume contacts “when the time is right” on Ukraine with Russian President Vladimir Putin, whom he has not spoken to since December.

“My last telephone conversation was some time ago. But I intend to talk to Putin again when the time comes,” he said in an interview published by the Koelner Stadt-Anzeiger daily.

“We must achieve a just peace, and the condition for this is the withdrawal of Russian troops,” added Olaf Scholz.

“Russia will not win this war militarily,” General Milli told reporters on Thursday after a virtual meeting of the Contact Group on Ukraine, which includes about 50 military-supporting countries, in Kiev.

Russia’s original goals, including overthrowing the Ukrainian government, “are not achievable by military means, it won’t work,” the senior American added.


Kyiv was once again bombed in the middle of the night

Russian troops bombed Kyiv again on the night of Thursday to Friday, the city’s military-civilian administration said, saying all missiles were intercepted and destroyed.

“Another air attack on Kyiv, the 13th in a row since the beginning of May! And as always at night, ”the administration said in a Telegram account. “According to preliminary information, all enemy objects in the airspace of Kyiv were detected and destroyed,” she added.

In its daily morning report, the Ukrainian General Staff reported 55 Russian air attacks over the past 24 hours, including 36 using explosive drones, and four rocket attacks.


Belarus claims Russia is supplying it with nuclear weapons

Russia is following through on its threats and has begun supplying Belarus with nuclear warheads, President Alexander Lukashenko said Thursday as the Russian army is in a difficult situation in Ukraine in anticipation of an imminent counteroffensive by Ukrainian forces.

“The transfer of nuclear charges has begun,” he said in a video posted on Telegram.


Africa fears the threat of a “new version of the Cold War”

The African Union has warned that Africa must not again become a “geostrategic battleground” as warring Russia and Ukraine vie for greater influence on the continent.

“In this international context of confrontation, divergent geopolitical interests, each other’s will threatens to turn Africa into a geostrategic battlefield, thereby recreating a new version of the Cold War,” warned AU Commission Chairman Moussa Faki Mahamat.
