Government of Ecuador suspends state of emergency in provinces hit by violence

The government of Ecuador announced this Wednesday that it will suspend the state of emergency that it applied on April 1 in the provinces of Guayas, st. Helen and The riverspunished by a wave of crimes and violence.

This was revealed by the Government’s National Security Adviser, Paco Moncayoin a press conference in which he explained that the lifting of the state of emergency responds to the fact that at present this figure is not required for the Armed forces act with the Police on internal security issues.

Thus “We are going to lift the state of exception and only in some very special circumstance that could occur would this figure be used, because it is no longer necessary to be able to do everything we need to achieve peace and tranquility”, affirmed the government adviser.

Moncayo, however, accepted that achieving citizen peace and tranquility is a “task so arduous that it cannot be achieved overnight”.

On his side, the Minister of the Interior, Juan Zapatatook stock of the application of the state of emergency in the metropolitan district of Guayaquil (the capital of the province of Guayas), in st. Helen and The riversall of them in the coastal zone of the southwest of the country.

Zapata indicated that during the exceptional period, law enforcement captured 209 suspects considered “high and medium value whites”, considering that they belong to Organized Crime Groups (GDO) linked to the spiral of violence.

He also commented that 121 people related to extortion crimes have been captured who, according to investigations, would be part of the criminal gangs known as “The Wolves”, “Tiguerones”, “R7″, “Eagles” and “choneros“, among others.

Zapata said that law enforcement operations have made it possible to reduce the rate of violent deaths in the three provinces by 8%, with a drop of 6% in Guayaquil, 13% in Los Ríos and 19% in Santa Elena.

On April 1, the Ecuadorian president, the conservative William Lassoannounced urgent measures to combat insecurity in the country, among which he mentioned the authorization to possess and carry weapons for civilian use for personal defense and the state of emergency.
