NATO will make a decision on Ukraine before the Vilnius summit, according to Romania

The President of Romania, klaus iohannisdeclared today at the summit of the European Political Community (EPC) in Moldova that the member countries of the NATO make a decision on the application Ukraine to join the Alliance “before the summit” on July 11 and 12 in Vilnius.

“We will make a decision before the summit”said Iohannis after meeting with the hostess and president of moldovaMaia Sandu, shortly before the closing of said summit, in which the president of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky.

Iohannis was skeptical about the possibility of drawing up a “road map or calendar” on the income of Ukraine to the Alliance, for fear that “may induce unwanted reactions”.

“The important is that Ukraine feel, with guarantees from us, that we help them until they win and that the Ukrainians are also convinced after the NATO summit that we consider that we are on their side and they on our side”said Iohannis, adding that “The same is also valid for Moldova”.

At the summit held in moldovaIohannis and Zelensky signed an agreement whereby Romania undertakes to “support Ukraine becoming a member of the NATO as soon as conditions permit.”

The Ukrainian president asked in his speech before the summit that the member states formulate at the Vilnius summit “a clear invitation” for Ukraine to enter the NATO. Zelensky it also asked to receive “security guarantees” from NATO until the moment of accession.

The Ukrainian head of state also expressed the “disappointment” of the Ukrainians at the lack of clear prospects for his country’s entry into the Alliance.
