Trump is currently in Bedminster, New Jersey. A person familiar with the situation who was not authorized to discuss it publicly said Trump’s lawyers were contacted by prosecutors shortly before he announced on his platform. TruthSocial who had been charged.

Within 20 minutes of his announcement, Trump had begun raising funds for his 2024 presidential campaign.

Trump is due to appear in court Tuesday afternoon in Miami.

The case adds to the growing legal danger for Trump, who has already been indicted in NY and faces additional investigations into Washington and Atlanta which could also lead to criminal charges. As impeachment progresses, Trump’s claims of broad executive power will be pitted against the attorney general’s mantra merrick garland that no person, including a former commander-in-chief, should be considered above the law.

The indictment stems from a months-long investigation by special counsel jack smith about whether Trump broke the law by withholding hundreds of classified documents on his property Palm Beach, sea-a-lakeand whether Trump took steps to obstruct government efforts to recover the records.

Prosecutors have said that Trump took about 300 classified documents with him to Mar-a-Lago after leaving the White House, including about 100 that were seized by the fbi last August in a house search that underscored the seriousness of the Justice Department’s investigation.

Trump and his team have long viewed the special counsel investigation as far more dangerous than the New York affair, both politically and legally. Campaign aides had been preparing for the fallout ever since Trump’s lawyers were notified that he was the target of the investigation, assuming it was not a question of if charges would be filed, but when.

But it remains unclear what the immediate and long-term political consequences will be for Trump. His first indictment netted millions of dollars in contributions from angry supporters and did not hurt Trump in the polls. Whatever happens, the impeachment — and the legal fight that follows — will once again put Trump in the spotlight, taking the spotlight off other candidates trying to build momentum in the 2024 presidential race.
