“The decision taken by the Icelandic authorities to lower the level of diplomatic relations with Russia destroys the full range of Russian-Icelandic cooperation, which was traditionally based on mutual respect and multifaceted cooperation”, The Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

Russian diplomacy maintained that Russia “made an important contribution to the formation of a sovereign Icelandic statewas one of the first to recognize its independence, and did much to protect Iceland’s interests in difficult times for the Icelandic people”.

I affirm that “all responsibility for such evolution of the situation falls entirely on the Icelandic side”.

We will take this unfriendly decision into account when we build our ties with Iceland in the future. All Reykjavik’s anti-Russian actions will inevitably be followed by a corresponding reaction”, he warned.

Iceland has had an embassy in Moscow since 1944, except between 1951 and 1953, when trade between the two countries was suspended.
