This is the fifteenth extension of the exception regime, which will be in force from June 16 to July 15.

This regime, which among other things allows arrests without a prior judicial order, was established in response to an escalation of homicides that claimed the lives of 87 people between March 25 and 27, 2022.

Salvadorans have regained their freedom”, declared the official deputy Walter Germanby justifying his vote in favor of the measure that led to the imprisonment of some 70,000 suspected gang members.

The deputy of the leftist ex-guerrilla of the Farabundo Martí Front for National Liberation (FMLN), Marleni Funesrejected the extension of the regime and when voting against asked for “dignify the victims” because “in the captures there are arbitrariness”.

The measure has been questioned by different humanitarian organizations for allegedly violating people’s rights, after the NGO Cristosal He denounced that in the first year of the regime, 153 people who were imprisoned died.
