Claudia Sheinbaum says goodbye to the leadership of Mexico City before seeking the presidency in 2024

Despite the high temperatures recorded in the country these days, thousands of people gathered in the central Plaza del Monument to the Revolution and its surrounding streets as a sign of support for Sheinbaum, who this Friday will leave office to participate in the internal process with which his party, the ruling National Regeneration Movement (Morena), will designate its candidate for the presidential elections of June 2024.

Today is my last day as head of government of Mexico City. He left the great task of governing this worthy people of the city to go out to meet the people of Mexicoto give continuity to the fourth transformation of the Republic, to make it a reality that a woman leads the destinies of the nation”, he said in the massive meeting with the citizens.

After almost five years in office, the Mexican official celebrated some of her successes and compared them with those achieved at the national level by the president Andres Manuel Lopez Obradorwith whom he has great affinity and whom he considered the best leader in the country’s modern history.

We went from corruption to honesty, from privileges to rights, from surrendering the city to the interests of a few to rescuing the city for the interest of the majority, from exclusion to inclusion, from discrimination to equality, from repression to freedom, from silence to music, and from anger to joy”, he listed.

Sheinbaum highlighted the economic, labor, tourism, health and cultural advances achieved in the Mexican capital, but also the investments in education and social programs focused on the poorest inhabitants.

He also highlighted advances in security, such as the reduction of high-impact crimes by 58% and intentional homicides by 51%.

At the ceremony, Sheinbaum was accompanied by members of her cabinet, including the capital’s Secretary of Government and proposed by the president as her replacement, marti batres.

According to most polls, Sheinbaum is the favorite in the internal contest, the result of which will be known on September 6, and with it she would become her party’s candidate for the presidency of Mexico.

It is expected that on Friday afternoon, after stepping down from his position, he will formalize his registration as an applicant for what Brunette has called “national defense coordinator of the fourth transformation”, as the movement of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador is known, which, practically, will mean being the presidential candidate.
