USA: Indiana judge blocks law against trans minors

A judge from the US state of Indiana provisionally blocked this Friday a law that prohibits access to gender transition treatments for minors in the territory.

The order prevents state authorities from applying almost all the regulations except for one of its provisions, referring to sex change surgeries, which will continue to be prohibited for minors.

“Today’s victory is proof that Indiana’s trans youth, their families and their allies never stopped fighting.”said in a statement Ken Falk, legal director of the local office of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU)the organization that filed the lawsuit against the law of Indiana.

Falk assured that they will not rest until the regulation is definitively eliminated.

The law was scheduled to take effect on July 1. The state’s own Republican governor, eric holcombwhich ratified the rule in April, said that the text was difficult to understand, according to The Hill.

These types of laws that restrict the access of trans minors to gender transition treatments have recently become popular in the states of the country governed by Republicans, such as Texas, Florida, Georgia or Alabama, which in recent months have approved different regulations against the community LGBTI.

Conservatives argue that these measures are intended to prevent young people from making irreversible decisions that they may later regret.

Many Democratic legislators, for their part, warn of the risk of stigmatizing a community that already often suffers high levels of discrimination and abuse.

In addition, organizations that defend civil rights fear that the situation could lead more young transgender people to commit suicide, since they are among the most vulnerable groups.

According to ACLUalmost 500 laws or bills introduced this year in the conferences states seek to restrict the rights of the community LGBTI.
