Serious incidents in the Argentine province of Jujuy while the new Constitution was approved

Strong incidents between protesters and security forces occurred this Tuesday in the capital of the Argentine province of Jujuy (north), in the vicinity of the local legislature, in rejection of the new provincial constitution, which is framed in a confrontation between the government national Peronist and the local opposition.

The Governor of Jujuy, Gerardo Moralesmade the Argentine president “responsible”, Alberto Fernandez, and the vice president, Cristina Fernandez, “of the extreme violence that is taking place in the province of Jujuy,” he said on his Twitter account, where he posted videos from a news channel showing the incidents.

The violent are not going to twist our arm. After 40 years of democracy, I repudiate and call on all Argentines to repudiate what Kirchnerism and the Left Front are doing in Jujuy.”added the governor.

The demonstrators stoned the police and the provincial Legislature building, in Jujuy’s capital, and removed the fences behind which the security forces were, who responded with tear gas and rubber bullets.

You are the only one responsible for having led our beloved province of Jujuy to this limit situation trying to impose a constitutional reform that does not respect the National Constitution “. President Alberto Fernández responded on his social networks.

Vice President Cristina Fernández also responded to the governor with the phrases “take charge” and “stop with the repressive madness that your own actions have unleashed.”

What is happening in the province of Jujuy is your absolute responsibility and you know it. It seems that savage repression is in their DNA.” The vice president told Morales on her Twitter account, and accused him of being a “senior official” during the 2001 government that declared a State of Siege and “was responsible for the murder of 38 Argentines.”

“Please, Morales, don’t lie anymore… that even James Cameron realized”said the former president (2007-2015).

In addition to the destruction in the capital of Jujuy, which included vandalizing vehicles, the protesters set fire to some of the local legislature facilities.

In the enclosure the treatment of the opinion of the Drafting Commission of the Constituent Convention was planned.

A constituent convention of Jujuy approved last Thursday a reform of the provincial Constitution that ensures the right to assembly and demonstration “when they are peaceful and without weapons” and recognizes the pre-existence of the original communities and indigenous peoples, but determines that the State is the in charge of recognizing their legal status and community possession of the lands.

These incidents are the continuation of the roadblocks in the province of Jujuy that were repressed by security forces over the weekend.

The demonstrations repudiate the constitutional reform and call for the resignation of Morales -who in turn sounds like a candidate to integrate a presidential formula of the opposition coalition Together for Change in this year’s presidential elections-.

The Secretary of Human Rights of the national government, Horace Pietragallaarrived last Sunday in Jujuy to support the protesters.
