Blinken says “hard work” remains to achieve peace between Armenia and Azerbaijan

The Secretary of State for USA, Anthony Blinkenassured this Thursday that there is still a “hard work“to achieve peace between Armenia and Azerbaijanbut thanked both countries for the “frankness” during their negotiations.

The leader of US diplomacy expressed himself like this when closing the second round of peace talks held on the outskirts of Washington among the foreign ministers of Armenia and of Azerbaijan, Ararat Mirzoyan and Jeyhun Bayramovrespectively.

I think everyone here understands that the closer we get to an agreement, in some cases, it becomes more difficult because the most difficult issues are left for last.Blinken said.

However, the Secretary of State stated that he greatly appreciates that the foreign ministers of both countries have shown a “spirit of frankness and openness”, since he considered that this is the only way to reach a “understanding”.

Blinken recalled that the Armenian Prime Minister, Nikol Pashinyanand the Azerbaijani president, Ilham Alievmeet soon in a meeting mediated by the European Union (EU), and that a final agreement is closed “in the weeks and months to come”.

Armenia and Azerbaijan have been working for months on a peace treaty mediated by Russiathe EU and USAand in parallel they try to delineate the common border, pending since the independence of the USSR in 1991.

The two countries, with the help of Russia, ended a 44-day war for control of Nagorno Karabakhthe mountainous region that is the cause of a conflict that has been going on since the late 1980s.

Nagorno Karabakh is internationally recognized as Azerbaijani territory, but it is inhabited by ethnic Armenians.

Yerevan lost control over more than two thirds of the territories in and around Karabakh in the last war, but maintains communication with the enclave through the corridor of lachinprotected by Russian peacekeeping troops.
