EU leaders to Serbia and Kosovo: “If tensions are not reduced, the consequences will be negative”

The leaders of the European Union (EU) condemned this Friday the increase in violence in northern Kosovo and warned of “negative consequences” if the two parties do not reduce the tensions that have been increasing in recent weeks.

“He European Council condemns the recent violent incidents that occurred in the north of Kosovo and calls for an immediate de-escalation of the situation”, indicated the community heads of state and government in conclusions approved at the two-day summit that concluded today in Brussels.

They insisted that Pristina and Belgrade abide by the commitments made in the framework of the dialogue for the normalization of their relations sponsored by the EU and, specifically, they asked the two parties to “create the conditions for holding early elections in the four municipalities in northern Kosovo.

“If tensions are not lowered, the consequences will be negative,” they emphasized.

The tensions between Kosovo and Serbia they increased in May due to the refusal of the Kosovar Serbs to accept Kosovar Albanian mayors in four municipalities chosen in elections boycotted by the Serbs who protest daily in front of the town halls of three of those municipalities.

The EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs, Josep Borrell, urgently summoned the Kosovar Prime Minister, Albin Kurti, and the Serbian President, Aleksandar Vucic, to Brussels last week to calm the situation, and both agreed to repeat the controversial elections.

The EU Pristina demands that the mayors exercise their positions in other buildings until new elections are held in which they ask for the unconditional participation of the Serbs.

“It is essential that the dialogue facilitated by the EU and led by the High Representative continue, as well as the rapid implementation of the agreement on the path towards normalization and its implementation annex,” the European Council stressed today, stressing that “this includes the establishment of the Association/Community of Municipalities of Serb Majority”.

On the other hand, the leaders of the EU They reiterated their “full and unequivocal” commitment to the prospect of EU membership for the Western Balkans and their support for accelerating a “merit-based” accession process and related reforms.
