One dead and one missing due to heavy rains in Japan

Heavy rains in different parts of Japan They left one person dead and at least one missing, authorities said Saturday, issuing evacuation alerts for nearly 2 million residents.

The national meteorological agency warned of possible landslides, floods and other calamities in the west, center and east of Japan by a powerful seasonal rain front.

In the prefecture of Yamaguchi, “a man was found dead” inside a car that was swept into a river, a local police officer told AFP.

In Yufuin the western prefecture of oitarescue teams are “still trying to establish contact” with a 70-year-old man who lived in a house destroyed by a landslide, a municipal representative said.

The disaster management agency issued non-mandatory evacuation alerts for 1.85 million residents spread across eight prefectures in the west of the archipelago.

Scientists say climate change intensifies the risk of heavy rainfall, because a warmer atmosphere holds more water.
