Lukashenko enacts an amendment that allows him to ban foreign media

The president of belarus, Alexander Lukashenkotoday enacted an amendment to the media law allowing the authorities to ban the work of foreign media in the country in case of hostile actions by states against Belarusian media.

Legislative innovation, according to the official agency Belarusian BELTAsearchedto “improve the mechanisms for defending national interests in the media sphere, as well as expanding the instruments to react to hostile actions against belarus”.

According to the amendmentmodifications are introduced in the news aggregators and in the legal status of their owners.

Likewise, the list of causes for the annulment of media licenses and for the restriction of access to the Internet, digital media and news aggregators is extended.

The amendment was approved on June 14 by the Republic Councilthe upper house of Parliament.

“Today it becomes evident that the Internet does not always serve the interests of the development of society and the State. The virtual space has become an instrument of information wars that are sometimes directed against state integers”, said the Belarusian Information Minister, Vladimir Pertsovwhen presenting the project.
