However, Blinken’s statement comes after the Constitutional Court of Guatemala, the highest court in the country, to suspend the officialization of the electoral results until the allegations of irregularities raised by nine political parties are investigated.

One of those parties is the National Unity of Hope (UNE), whose candidate, former first lady Sandra Torres, will face in the second round on August 20 the candidate of the Seed Movement, Bernardo Arévalowho gave the surprise in the first round.

The decision of the Constitutional Court of Guatemala establishes that the Supreme Electoral Tribunal must suspend the officialization of the electoral results, but expresses its desire that all complaints of alleged irregularities be resolved before the second round, on August 20.

The presidential candidate who is elected will take office as president on January 14 next for a period of four years.
