Brazil: Lula says that Biden is a “stimulus” to try to be re-elected in 2026

The Brazilian President, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silvaaffirmed this Thursday that the candidacy for re-election of his US counterpart, Joe Bidenit is “a stimulus” for him to try to renew his term in 2026, when he will be about 81 years old.

Lula is currently 77 years old and has just completed the first six months of his third termsince he previously governed in two periods, between 2003 and 2010, while Biden, 80, has announced his intention to contest the Democratic primaries for the 2024 elections.

The Brazilian progressive leader assured in the last electoral campaign that I would not seek to repeat my mandate in 2026, but since he took power on January 1, he has left the door open to contest re-election.

For the 2026 presidential elections, the former president will not be able to present himself Jair Bolsonaro, Lula’s biggest political adversary and who lost re-election last year to the progressive leader.

Bolsonaro, leader of the extreme right, was disqualified for eight years by the Superior Electoral Tribunal (TSE), which convicted him of “abuse of political power” in the 2022 elections, for undertaking a harsh smear campaign against the electoral system and the democratic institutions.
