Biden made those remarks during a meeting with Zelensky on the margins of the summit of the NATO in Vilniuswhich ends this Wednesday after two days of sessions.

He american president began by praising the role he has played Zelensky in defense of Ukraine and stated that he has given “example to the whole world what it is to have genuine courage.”

“Her resilience and determination have been an example to the whole world. The frustration you feel I can only imagine it. I know there are many times when you feel frustrated and wonders when things are going to get to him, how fast, and how we’re going to get there. But I promise you that USAwe are doing everything we can to deliver what you need as fast as we can”Biden said.

All eyes were on this Wednesday at the meeting between Zelensky and Biden and a lot of attention was being paid to whether there was any sign of tension, but both made a show of harmony in front of the cameras with the exchange of compliments and words of thanks.

The meeting occurred after the alliance issued a statement on Tuesday in which the NATO I affirm that “Ukraine’s future is in NATO”but in which it established that kyiv must pass a series ofconditions” for accession, such as reforms in democratic and military matters.

The text that was agreed was in line with the proposals of United States and Germanywho feared that going too far could be construed as a provocation by Russia.

In fact, the declaration did not include a calendar for its integration, as requested by the Ukraine and the countries on the eastern flank (Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Poland), the most similar to the ukrainian cause.

Before that statement was made public, Zelensky had expressed his disappointment on Twitter and considered “absurd” the lack of a clear timetable for the integration of Ukraine in the NATO.

During the meeting with Bidena journalist yelled at Zelensky for these statements and whether he was disappointed with the results of the summit

Zelensky responded by saying that the summit had been a “success” and expressed gratitude to the leaders of the G7 for having signed with his Government a statement in which they commit themselves to the defense of Ukraine in the long run.

That declaration, signed this Wednesday in the margins of the summit in Vilniusalso establishes that, in the event of a future armed attack by Russiathe countries of the G7 intend to make the necessary consultations with Ukraine “immediately” to determine “the proper steps”.

In any case, the declaration of the G7 falls far short of any compromise that might resemble Article 5 of the Atlantic Treaty, the principle that establishes that an attack on a member of the NATO represents one to the entire organization.

Today was the fifth bilateral meeting between Biden and Zelensky since the American came to the White House in January 2021. The last time they saw each other was in May, during the G7 summit in the Japanese city of hiroshima.
