Chilean Congress stops motion of censure against Minister of Education for gender agenda

The Congress of Chili rejected on Wednesday the opposition’s request to impeach the Minister of Education Marco Antonio Avila for his alleged gender agenda in favor of sexual minorities.

The forces opposed to the left-wing government of gabriel boric intended to replace the civil servant, at a time when the ultra-right, embodied in the Republican Partygains ground after obtaining a majority in the council that writes a new constitution.

By 78 votes against and 67 in favor, the Chamber of Deputieswhere the ruling party does not have majorities, rejected the request for a motion of censure against Ávila.

The opposition based its request on seven accusations that basically questioned the “Conference on Non-Sexist Education” promoted by the head of the portfolio, and which according to the government only promote gender equality and respect for the rights of sexual minorities.

The government denounced thehomophobic character” of the failed trial.

The constitutional accusation against the Minister of Education and Professor Marco Ávila (…). The lack of legal support and his homophobic character were evident”, President Boric tweeted after the vote.

If the request was successful, Ávila would have been suspended from his post while parliament debated his dismissal. If the Senate finally gave the green light to the motion of no confidence, he would have been disqualified from public service for five years.

My call today, after this accusation, is to take care of the treatment in the political world, to respect each other beyond the differences, not to turn the fair differences between one another into personal attacks.”Avila said after the decision.

During a radio interview, the opposition deputy Maria Luisa Cordero claimed that even the minister should “go to jail for incitement to precocity and child sexual perversity”.

Ávila is the sixth Minister of Education to be subjected to a constitutional accusation in the last 30 years. Only two of them were dismissed: Yasna Provostin 2008, and harald beyerin 2013.
