Bolivian former presidential candidate and sports leader Juan Carlos Durán dies

Politician and sports leader Bolivian Juan Carlos Duran Saucedowho was a candidate for the Presidency in 1997, died this Thursday in the eastern city of Santa Cruz at 73 years old.

Durán’s family published an obituary confirming his death and to invite him to his wake, which will also take place in Santa Cruz.

Local media reported that the politician, who was going to turn 74 at the end of the month, suffered from cancer and had health complications from the disease.

Durán was Minister of the Interior in the Government of Victor Paz Estenssoro between 1987 and 1989, and also chaired the Bolivian Senate in the periods 1993-1994 and 1995-1996.

A lawyer by profession, the politician was the presidential candidate of the Revolutionary Nationalist Movement (MNR) in the 1997 general elections, in which he came second.

He is also remembered as president of the football club royal santa cruzwhose stadium was built precisely during the Durán administration.

The Governor of Santa Cruz, Luis Fernando Camachopublished on his social networks a message of condolences for Durán’s family, who was “a great friend, prominent Santa Cruz and an excellent professional”.

Real Santa Cruz regretted the departure of its former president in a Facebook post and remarked that his “tireless efforts and dedication to the club will always be remembered”.
