“Time Capsule”: a treasure found in a field will be put up for sale in the United States

The treasure was probably buried over 150 years ago. More than 700 US Civil War gold coins found buried in a cornfield in Kentucky in the southeastern US are up for sale and could sell for several million dollars.

A valuable treasure was discovered on a farm in Kentucky earlier this year, according to the organization that appraised the coins and the company that put them up for sale. Its exact location and the identity of the person who discovered it have not been released at this time.

However, in a video posted on a coin-selling website, we see a man filming himself digging into the ground in which the coins appear. “This is the craziest thing in the world,” he exclaims.

Aftermath of the Civil War

According to the auction website GovMint.com, the coins date back to between 1840 and 1863, and the loot includes so-called “Indian” $1 gold coins, as well as $10 and $20 gold coins. Among them, even 18 American gold coins with a face value of 20 dollars were found, extremely rare and minted in 1863 in Philadelphia. According to collectors, they could be sold for six figures.

“The importance of this discovery cannot be overstated,” rare coin dealer Jeff Garrett said in a statement, noting that the treasure is a “time capsule.”

During the Civil War (1861-1865), when the slave states of the South clashed with the abolitionist states of the North, Kentucky took a neutral stance, but was nevertheless involved in this deadly conflict. “The Kentucky gold stash may be one of the aftermath of this conflict, with the coins lost over 150 years ago,” said the NGC, which swore the coin.
