The Swedish embassy in Iraq is set on fire after a demonstration

Dozens of protesters continued around the embassy, ​​from which a plume of smoke rose, while riot police fanned out in large numbers around the area, the AFP correspondent said.

The Iraqi government condemned the incident, said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

It was not immediately possible to know if the diplomatic mission was empty at the time of the attack and if its staff had been evacuated.

The incident occurred after the Swedish police authorized a demonstration on Thursday in front of the embassy of Iraq in Stockholm whose organizer plans to burn a Koran and an Iraqi flag.

The protest in baghdad was organized by followers of the influential religious leader Moqtada Sadr.

The Swedish media pointed out that the public burning of the Koran and the flag had been organized by Salwan Momikaan Iraqi refugee living in the Nordic country.

Salwan already burned some pages of a copy of the Koran in front of the largest mosque in Stockholm on June 28 during the Muslim Feast of Sacrifice.

That prompted Moqtada’s supporters to storm the Swedish embassy in Baghdad.
