The European Union (EU) today demanded Russia the “immediate and unconditional” release of the imprisoned opposition leader Alexei Navalnyfor whom the Russian Prosecutor’s Office today requested an additional sentence of 20 years in prison.

“Closed-door hearing in another trial for political motives against Navalnywho now faces an additional 20 years in prison for legitimate political and anti-corruption activities.”wrote Peter Stanospokesman for the head of community diplomacy, Josep Borrellon his Twitter profile.

The Russian Prosecutor requested a sentence of 20 years in prison for Navalny in a new express trial that was held against him for alleged extremism, the politician’s Telegram channel reported.

The prosecutor’s request includes that the sentence be served in a strict regime prison. The court will deliver the judgment on next August 4 at 13:00 GMT.

Being sentenced to 20 years in prisonthe opposition leader, who is already serving an 8-year prison sentence for fraud, will initially have to spend three decades in jail.

The trial began on June 19 in the prison of vladimirabout 200 kilometers from Moscowand it was held behind closed doors, except on one brief occasion.
