South Korea raises its alert level for rains that leave 47 dead and three missing

The government of South Korea raised its disaster alert level this Saturday, while the country has been experiencing heavy torrential rains since last week that have already left 47 dead and three missing.

The South Korean government raised the alert level against disasters from one to two starting at 9:00 p.m. on Saturday (12 GMT), which establishes a series of countermeasures against the possible consequences of the rainy.

According to the South Korean Meteorological Agency, 50 to 120 millimeters of rainfall is expected in Seoul through Monday, while most regions of the country will also experience significant rainfall.

The downpours last week have left damage to more than 8,000 public and private infrastructures, including roads and flooded houses, in addition to 47 deaths and three missing, according to the latest count published by the country’s Ministry of the Interior.

Some 34,353 hectares of farmland, more than half the size of Seoul, is floodedwhile 825,000 head of cattle, including chickens and ducks, died, detailed the local Yonhap news agency.
