European Union warns that it will suspend financial support to Niger due to rupture of the constitutional order

The European Union (EU) warned this Friday that the rupture of the constitutional order in Niger It will lead to the suspension of the budget support of the Twenty-seven to the African country, which suffered a coup d’état on Wednesday.

“Any breach of the constitutional order will have consequences on the cooperation between the EU and Nigerincluding the immediate suspension of all budget support.” said the head of community diplomacy, Josep Borrellin a statement on behalf of the entire EU.

The Spanish politician reiterated that the community club condemns “with the greatest firmness the coup d’état in Niger”. The Twenty seven They also asked that the security and freedom of movement of the president of the country be guaranteed “without conditions”, Mohamed Bazoum.

“The events of the last few days constitute a serious attack on stability and democracy in Niger”, added the high representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy.

He indicated that, “as underlined by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) in his latest statement”the coup is “a total violation of democratic principles on which the management of political power in the region is based”.

“The EU reiterates its support for the action of the organization of the subregion and for the ongoing efforts to allow an immediate return to constitutional order”, pointed out Borrell.

In fact, he claimed that the Twenty seven will remain “in close coordination” with the heads of state of the ECOWAS.

“The EU stand by the people of Niger and reaffirms its full commitment to strict respect for the rule of law, human rights and international humanitarian law in Niger”said.

Niger suffered a coup on Wednesday led by a military junta, self-styled National Council for the Safeguarding of the Homeland (CLSP), which announced the dismissal of the president mohammed bazoumthe suspension of the institutions, the closure of the borders and a night curfew until further notice.
