The former vice president told local US media that Trump was badly advised because he was “surrounded by a bunch of nutty lawyers who kept telling him what his ears wanted to hear”.

Pence made the remarks the day after Trump was charged with four counts, with maximum sentences of up to 20 years in prison, for trying to overturn the November 2020 election in which he lost to Biden.

According to the indictment, Trump deliberately lied about false voter fraud and pressured Pence, in his capacity as president of the Senate, to block the ratification of Biden’s victory in Congress on January 6, 2021, when a mob of “trumpists” assaulted the Capitol.

The accusation points to a group of six accomplices, including the lawyer and former mayor of NY Rudy Giulianiwho helped Trump devise and implement his plans.

Pence said Wednesday that the attack on the US Capitol building was “a tragedy”, and claimed that he complied with his “duty” by refusing to carry out Trump’s plans.

Someone who asks another person to bypass the Constitution should never again be president of USA“, he claimed.

The former president has two other criminal trials pending for bribing the porn actress stormy daniels and for having illegally taken classified documents when he left the White House.

Despite his judicial fronts, Trump appears unbeatable in the polls for the Republican primaries ahead of next year’s elections, in which Biden will seek his re-election.
