Confessed serial killer sentenced in 2007 executed in Florida

A confessed serial killer convicted of the murder of his wife and another woman was executed by lethal injection Thursday in the state of Floridareported local media.

James Barnes61, who did not seek to stop his execution, was executed at 6:00 p.m. local time (22:00 GMT) at the state prison in Floridalocal television stations reported.

Barnes was serving a life sentence for the murder of his wife, Beautifulin 1997, when in 1988 he confessed to the rape and murder of Patricia Millera 41-year-old nurse.

He was sentenced to death in 2007 for Miller’s crime.

Barnes was interviewed by the German film director Werner Herzog for the television seriesOn Death Row” in 2012 and confessed to two other murders for which he never faced charges.

In late July, the Florida Conference of Catholic Bishops urged the Governor Ron DeSantis stop the execution of Barnes.

The voluntary acceptance of Mr. Barnes (…) does not absolve the state from provoking it”, they wrote in a letter. “Simply put, no one should be executed in our modern penal system, even when they voluntarily accept it.”.

DeSantis, one of the candidates for the Republican nomination in the 2024 presidential electionsigned Barnes’ death warrant and declined to be at his execution.

Barnes becomes the fifth inmate to be executed in Florida in 2023.

So far 17 executions have been carried out this year in USA.
