Tropical storm Fred leaves half a million people without water and electricity in the Dominican Republic

A total of 580,186 users were left without water and 439,263 without electricity due to the effects of Fred on Dominican Republicwhere yesterday as a tropical storm it dumped heavy rains, according to the report offered this Thursday by the Emergency Operations Center (COE).

The agency, which keeps 31 of the country’s 32 provinces on alert, reported that Fredalready downgraded to a tropical depression, caused 1,705 people to flee their homes, partially affected 344 houses and destroyed three.

The phenomenon caused damage to three highways, while 23 towns are cut off due to flooding.

The heavy rainfall caused by Fred caused yesterday the closure of the international airports of Las Américas and La Isabela, both in Santo Domingo, reopened later after weather conditions improved.

Fredwhich was downgraded to a depression on Wednesday, continues to drop heavy rains in Haiti and the Dominican Republic and moves this Thursday between eastern Cuba and the southeastern Bahamas with maximum sustained winds of 35 miles per hour (55 km/h).

The National Hurricane Center (NHC) of the United States indicated today in its morning bulletin that Fred is located 40 miles (65 km) west-southwest of Great Inagua Island, Bahamas, and 80 miles (175 km) east of Guantanamo, in Cuba.

The system is moving in a west-northwest direction with a forward speed of 16 mph (26 km/h).

NHC meteorologists, based in Miami, Florida, forecast that the system will experience little change in the intensity of its winds throughout today, although on Friday it could begin to “intensify again”.
