France: Thousands of evacuees due to a fire near the Spanish border

Several thousand people, mostly tourists who were staying in campsites, were evacuated this Monday around the seaside resort french of Argeles-sur-Mera few kilometers from the Spanish border, due to a fire that broke out in the massif of Les Alberesnext to Mediterranean.

The French Minister of the Interior, Gerald Darmanindescribed the fire as “great violence”, in a message on his Twitter account in which he asked the population and people who are on vacation in the area “the greatest vigilance”.

Darmanin pointed out that 13 planes, 3 helicopters and more than 500 firefighters had been mobilized to fight the flames.

The fire, which started in the early afternoon next to a forest track in the municipality of saint andrebordering with Argeles-sur-Merhad affected 480 hectares, according to the official estimate made public after 10:00 p.m. local time.

The Prefecture of the department of Eastern Pyrenees (Government delegation) had no record of personal injury.

The authorities had decided to evacuate several campsites in Argelès-sur-Mer as a precaution, such as La Pinede, To the sun, The ranch, Chênes Rouges either Le Bois Fleuri. Dozens of houses were also evicted.
