Why is there a new outbreak of COVID-19, where are there more infections and what measures are being taken?

Over the past few weeks, the world has experienced an uptick in reported cases of COVID-19without this entailing an increase in mortality from the disease, pointed out the World Health Organization (WHO) in a report issued late last week.

According to the document prepared on August 9, the international organization classified EG.5 as a variant of interest, due to the increase in its presence among those infected. In the same report, the WHO warns that the number of infections globally increased by 80% during July, unlike the previous month.

The highest peak occurred in the Western Pacific region, where there was a 137% increase in infections. However, the WHO clarified that the figures may not be reflecting the true situation as many nations have abandoned monitoring of the disease since it ceased to be considered a global health emergency in May.

The health authority estimates that 17% of the new cases of COVID-19 correspond to EG.5, a subvariant of the omicron family, which in turn is part of the XBB strain.

It has been popularly baptized as Eris, although scientists do not recognize this name nor is it cited in that way in official reports.

Despite the increase in cases, the WHO clarified that these have not led to an increase in patient mortality. The organization’s data, by contrast, shows a 57% drop in deaths from COVID-19 over the same period.

To date, this rise in cases has not led to the recommendation of adopting new sanitary measures or resuming some of the strictest ones, such as social isolation and quarantine. However, the WHO has urged countries not to neglect their vaccination campaigns while major pharmaceutical companies such as Pfizer/BioNTech, Moderna and Novavax already prepare a special dose for the XBB strain.

In Peru, the Minsa recommended that the population complete its vaccination schedule, which corresponds to four doses.
