Argentina: Nearly 30 arrested for looting businesses in Córdoba and Mendoza

Nearly thirty people were arrested in Argentina after looting of commercial premises over the weekend in the provinces of Cordova and Mendozafacts that the government described as “Criminal acts” that seek to create confusion in the campaign for the presidential elections in October.

A partial looting of a supermarket in Jose C. Paza popular suburb 45 kilometers from Buenos Aireswas recorded on Tuesday afternoon, police officers and witnesses told AFP.

At least 20 people were arrested during the day in Cordova for the looting of some 12 shops, reported the provincial police. In Mendoza (west), seven people were charged.

Argentina is going through an acute economic crisiswith inflation of more than 100% per year and poverty of 40% of the population.

Argentines remember the looting that occurred in December 2001 as a traumatic episode, in the midst of the worst economic, social and political crisis they have experienced to date.

Also in 1989, at the height of hyperinflation, there was widespread looting.
