The president of the Communist Party of Chile, Guillermo Tellier, dies at the age of 79

The president of the communist party (PC) from Chile, william tellierdied early this Tuesday at the age of 79, reported the Clinical Hospital of the University of Chile, after suffering several health problems for a year, associated with the coronavirus he contracted in September.

“Has died Guillermo Teillier del Valle: young allendista, supported with all his energy the Popular Unity. Combatant and anti-fascist fighter against the dictatorship. Strategist for the consolidation of the popular and leftist forces, statesman and president of the Chilean Communist Party”, published his party in a statement of condolences spread on social networks.

For his part, the President gabriel boricexpressed his condolences and decreed national mourning: “We regret the departure of william tellier. Historical leader and benchmark of Chilean PC who played an essential role in the formation of different generations”.

“As a tribute to his dedication to Chili throughout his life, and his tireless effort to build a more just society, as President of the Republic, I have decided to decree a national mourning in his honor.” Boric added.

A communist militant since the late 1950s, Tellier joined the central committee of the PC in 1988 and presided over the party since March 2005, after the death of the historic leader and former deputy Gladys Marin.

After the coup of Augusto Pinocheton September 11, 1973, he went into hiding, but was arrested a year later and transferred to the Air Force War Academy, where he was tortured and imprisoned for two years in the underground.

After passing through other detention centers, in 1976 he was released and already in the 1980s, as head of the Military Commission of the PCbecame the link with the now extinct Manuel Rodríguez Patriotic Front (FPMR), the armed wing of the party that led the armed resistance to the dictatorship (1973-1990).

With the return to democracy and after several attempts, managed to reach the Congress in 2010, as deputy for the Metropolitan region, where the capital is located. He was re-elected in three terms and held his seat until March 2022.
