How Greece is dealing with the worst fire recorded in Europe since the beginning of the century

The Greek rescue authorities -supported by bodies from other countries of the European community- have spent nearly two weeks trying to put out the flames of what is considered the worst fire recorded in Europe since the beginning of the century.

The disaster that mainly affects the Evros region, close to the border with Turkey, has already consumed more than 155,000 hectares of forests, farmland and urban land. This area is equivalent to twice the area of ​​New York City.

In total, some 100,000 people have been affected, including 30,000 children. What caused the representative of Unicef ​​in the Hellenic country, Ghassan Khalil, urged that urgent help be addressed to minors.

So far, in addition, the disaster has caused the death of 20 people, including two minors. Authorities believe the victims were refugees from Türkiye.

Evros is a region hosting thousands of migrants trying to reach Europe from Asia, Africa and the Middle East.

During the last hours, the change in the direction of the winds caused the flames to reignite on the Leptokarya and Kotronia fronts, according to the local newspaper “Kathimerini”.

In addition, the authorities have warned that there is a high risk of fires in 13 regions of Greece, such as the islands of Crete and Rhodes or Attica.
