Niger: military regime announces to France that it has instructed to expel its ambassador

The showdown between the Nigerian putschists and France continues. The military regime in power in Niger since the July 26 coup ordered the expulsion of the French ambassador in a letter sent to Paris on August 29, the authenticity of which was confirmed to our Reuters colleagues by the coup liaison services.

A letter from Niger’s foreign ministry dated Tuesday indicated that the expulsion order was “irrevocable” and indicated that diplomatic immunity had been lifted from Ambassador Sylvain Itte. On Friday, the putschists gave him an ultimatum, giving him 48 hours to leave the country. The French ambassador, following the instructions of Paris, remained in place.

“Diplomatic cards and visas of this person and his family members are canceled”

“After the 48-hour period that has elapsed since August 28, 2023, the person concerned no longer enjoys the privileges and immunities associated with his status as a member of the diplomatic staff of the embassy,” the putschists write in their letter addressed to Paris. “Diplomatic cards and visas of this person and his family members are cancelled. The police services have been instructed to proceed with his expulsion,” they say.

On Thursday, French General Staff spokesman Colonel Pierre Godillier warned that “the French armed forces are ready to respond to any renewed tension that would undermine French military and diplomatic influence in Niger” and that “measures have been taken to protect these forces.” right of way.”
