Typhoon Haikui hits southeast Taiwan with winds of up to 191 kilometers per hour

He haikui typhoon made landfall around 3:00 p.m. local time (07:00 GMT) this Sunday in the southeast of taiwanwith winds of up to 191 kilometers per hour that have caused alerts in a good part of the island, reports the official CNA news agency.

An hour before landfall, the storm – which reaches the level of “very strong typhoon”- moved at about 22 kilometers per hour in a west-northwest direction, according to data from the Central Meteorological Office (CWB) Taiwanese.

The aforementioned institution predicts that haikui will reach the strait Formosa tonight, though the outer edge of the storm won’t leave the island until late Monday.

The CWB recalled that Haikui is the first major storm to hit taiwan from the Typhoon Bailu in August 2019.

Authorities evacuated hundreds of people from the area of Taitungwhere Haikui made landfall, and also suspended operations on at least three rail lines on the island.

Parts of southern Taiwan are under rain alerts.”extremely strong or torrential”, which could reach up to 700 millimeters (mm) in some mountainous areas.

According to the hurricane tracking platform Zoom EarthHaikui could reach the shores of China -south of xiamena major city in the southeastern province of Fujian– Early Tuesday morning, a typhoon weakening to a severe tropical storm.

The neighboring province of Canton and the regions of Hong Kong and macaufurther south, remained on maximum alert this weekend due to the passage of the super typhoon saolawhich has already become a tropical depression after making landfall around noon this Saturday.
