War in Ukraine: Kremlin ‘can’t’ confirm Putin-Kim Jong-un summit

Russia keeps a secret. Moscow did not confirm Tuesday a summit between Vladimir Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, who the United States says will make a rare trip abroad to meet with the Russian president. “No, we cannot (confirm), we have nothing to say on this subject,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters in response to reporters about the White House’s claims.

According to Washington, North Korean leader Kim Jong-un intends to visit Russia to discuss with President Vladimir Putin the sale of weapons for his war in Ukraine. “These potential deals will allow Russia to obtain significant amounts” of weapons, especially artillery ammunition, as well as raw materials for its defense industry.

“As we said earlier, negotiations on the supply of arms between Russia and North Korea are actively moving forward,” said Adrian Watson, spokeswoman for the White House National Security Council.

According to The New York Times, Kim Jong Un is expected to travel to Vladivostok, on Russia’s east coast, on an armored train later this month to meet with Vladimir Putin. From September 10 to 13, Vladivostok will host the VIII Eastern Economic Forum, organized by the Kremlin.

The North Korean leader’s trips abroad are rare. In addition to traveling to Singapore and Vietnam in 2018 and 2019 for summit meetings with then US President Donald Trump, Kim Jong-un made four visits to China. He also already met with Vladimir Putin in Vladivostok in 2019.
