UK to ban Russian group Wagner as ‘terrorist’, media say

United Kingdom will prohibit the Russian Wagner paramilitary group declaring it a terrorist organization, the press reported Tuesday citing the Secretary of the Interior, Suella Braverman.

London plans to convert to wagner group an organization “proscribed” under anti-terrorism laws, as well as the Islamic State and Al Qaedaaccording to the Daily Mail newspaper.

“Wagner is a violent and destructive organization that served as a military tool of the Russia of Vladimir Putin abroadBraverman stated, according to the newspaper.

“While the Putin regime decides what to do with the monster it created, Wagner’s continued destabilizing activities only serve the Kremlin’s political goals.”.

Under the Terrorism Lawthe Secretary of the Interior has the power to ban an organization if she believes it is participating in terrorism.

“They are terrorists, simple as that, and this prohibition order makes it clear in the law of United Kingdom”, the BBC added, citing the minister.

The group’s operations in Ukraine, middle East and Africa “are a threat to global security”, he indicated.

The draft of the measure to ban the paramilitary group will be sent to Parliament on Wednesday, according to the media.

London announced sanctions in July against 13 individuals and companies it said have links to the Russian group in Africa, accusing it of crimes including murder and torture.

Wagner’s founder, Yevgeny Prigozhinwho died in a plane crash in August, had also been sanctioned by the UK along with several of its commanders who took part in the Russian war in Ukraine.

Prigozhin died two months after ordering his forces to overthrow the Russian military command.
