WHO reports global coronavirus cases and deaths down for third consecutive week

The global cases of coronavirus COVID-19 In the week of September 20 to 26, there were 3.3 million, which represents a decrease of 10% compared to the previous seven days, according to the epidemiological report that periodically publishes the World Health Organization (WHO).

All regions experienced decreases, although in Europe, where there is still more than a million weekly infections, the decrease was only 1%, while in the rest of the continents there was around a 15% fall in infections.

The same 10% decline was recorded last week in deaths from COVID-19, which totaled 55,830 globally, marking the fourth consecutive weekly decline and the largest drop in deaths since June.

Africa was the exception, as deaths rose 5% last week (however, in absolute figures it was the region with the fewest deaths, 2,500), while in Europe the decline was also modest, 1% (14,000 deaths) and in South and East Asia the fall was over 20%.

Regarding the accumulated since the beginning of the pandemic, at least 232 million infections of COVID-19, of which 4.7 million died.

Last week, the United States remained the country that reported the most new cases, with 765,000, although this figure was 31% lower than the previous weekly period.

It was followed by Brazil, with 247,000 infections (more than double the previous week, due to changes in the methodology), the United Kingdom with 230,000 (14% more) and India, with 204,000 new positives.

Regarding the vaccination campaign, and taking the information provided by the health networks of each country, the 6,200 million doses administered on the planet have already been exceeded, at a current rate of 25.77 million inoculations every day.

44.8% of the world’s population has received at least one dose of the vaccine against COVID-19, although that percentage falls to 2.3% in the case of low-income countries.
