AMLO says that “everything went well” in his party’s internal presidential process

The Mexican President, Andres Manuel Lopez ObradorI affirm that “everything went well” in the definition of the presidential candidacy of his party, the National Regeneration Movement (Morena), who this Wednesday announces his candidate for the 2024 election after a disputed process.

“In the end, it is the citizens who are going to decide, so they took my recommendations into account and that’s it, everything has gone well and I hope that today they will announce the result and I will find out like you”, declared the president in his morning press conference.

Brunettethe party founded by López Obrador, will announce its presidential candidate this Wednesday afternoon after conducting an in-person survey of 12,500 citizens about the six ruling party candidates, including the former head of government of Mexico City Claudia Sheinbaum and the former chancellor Marcelo Ebrard.

The list is completed by the former Secretary of the Interior Adam Augusto Lopezthe former leader of the Morena senators Ricardo Monreallicensed senator from the Green Party (PVEM) Manuel Velasco and the deputy with license from the Labor Party (PT) Gerardo Fernandez Norona.

But the internal process, which began in June, has been marked by controversy because Ebrard denounced “incidents and problems” in the survey and accused officials of Morena, the federal government and Mexico City to use resources to mobilize voters in favor of Sheinbaum, who from the beginning has led the polls.

Instead, López Obrador now assured that there have been no lawsuits between the applicants, to whom he proposed “not to debate among themselves” because “the debate had to be with the people”.

“My recommendations were taken into account, the governors acted very respectfully, and the aspiring coordinators of the transformation movement (candidates) behaved very well. Our adversaries and their spokesmen wanted to get hold of each other, get off (fight)”, he commented.

The president, who will conclude his term on October 1, 2024, announced that he will deliver the “baton” from his “transformation movement” to whoever is the winner of the survey, in a ceremony that is expected to be on Thursday.

“It is a way of handing over a responsibility that has fallen to me as the leader of a transformation movement, the cane symbolizes that, above all it is a symbol of indigenous communities, of the poorest in this country and it is to hand over that symbol to whoever should lead the transformation”, he commented.

Morena’s candidacy will face the senator in the June 2024 elections Xochitl Galvezwho last Sunday took over as the leader of the opposition Broad Front for Mexico.
