The president of the far-right party Republican, Arturo Squellacriticized this Monday the official acts in memory of the 50th anniversary of the coup d’état against the democratic government of the socialist president Salvador Allende and accused the current president, Gabriel Boricof fomenting division among Chileans.

President Boric and his ministers have taken care of every word to revive division among Chileans or to sow it among those who did not even exist 50 years ago.“, he stated before noting that “As if following a totalitarian script, the Government has not hidden its idea of trampling on freedom, trying to establish official truths, the ideology reaches such a point that they seek to condemn those who think differently”.

President, know that you will never achieve this, thanks to the freedom recovered in the last 50 years, Chileans can choose our opinion about what the Government of Allende or that of Pinocheteach Chilean today has the freedom to genuinely value the military intervention or to condemn it if they so deem it.”he added.

Along these same lines, he opined that “Each Chilean has formed his or her own judgment about what happened, including the violations of fundamental rights or the profound social, economic and political transformation that saved Chili of misery”.

Today the Government signs a declaration that in words commits itself to democracy and respect for Human Rights, who could disagree. But words are not enough, the desire to standardize people’s minds by sanctioning those who think differently is not only violent, but it deeply compromises democratic values.”.

The democratic challenge is precisely the opposite, in how to ensure that we respect our differences of opinion and judgments about events that occurred 50 years ago. We Chileans are free to value the successes that occurred at that time and condemn the bad, we are free to empathize with the pain of the affected families and at the same time to rejoice for those who, based on their recovered freedom, project a life that would never have been possible. under the tenor of a totalitarian administration”, he concluded.
