All this happened this afternoon at the separation fence with Israelduring a demonstration to commemorate the 18th anniversary of the withdrawal of Israeli colonies from the Strip, which also caused clashes, reported the Gazan news agency Sanad.

It is the most serious incident in the Gaza border area this year.

As stated by the Israeli Army in a statement, “In recent hours, hundreds of rioters participated in violent riots next to the security fence in the north of the Gaza Strip” and “they threw several explosive devices and grenades”.

According to a military spokesman, during the clashes “an attempt by the rioters to throw an explosive device at the soldiers was identified”. This one did not cross the fence and “detonated inside the territory of the Gaza Strip, wounding several of the rioters” who were in the area of the explosion.

Gaza has been under a tight Israeli blockade by land, sea and air since 2007, when the Islamist group Hamas -considered a terrorist by Israel, USA and the EU– took over the Palestinian enclave.

Since then, Palestinian militias in Gaza have faced Israel in four wars and dozens of military escalations. The last one was last May, when the armed wing of Islamic Jihad fought against Israeli forces in a harsh five-day conflict that left 34 Palestinians dead in the Strip and two dead on the Israeli side.

That area did experience an intense period of tension between 2018 and 2019, during the weekly marches in front of the dividing line, in which thousands of Palestinians called for the end of the blockade on Gaza in mobilizations in which the Israeli army killed 223 protesters and left more than 7,000 injured by live ammunition, according to data from United Nations.
