Preventive detention of opposition governor in Bolivia extended to three more months

A judge ordered the extension of preventive detention for three more months against the opposition leader and governor of Santa Cruz, Luis Fernando Camachowithin the framework of the case “coup d’état I” due to the 2019 crisis in Bolivia.

The precautionary hearing was directed by a magistrate from the jurisdiction of Peace virtually, in which Camacho appeared with his governor’s band, a position he holds despite his arrest since the end of last year.

At the hearing, Camacho spoke for several minutes and addressed the judge whom he said he would give the opportunity to act with “justice“and do something different”what the government wants”.

The band that I wear represents the will of a worthy people, a brave people that does not want to be subjugated by a government party and if today I had to be here (in prison), I always assume it with honor and dignity“said the governor.

The case “coup d’état I” is related to the events of 2019 that led to the resignation of the then president Evo Moraleswhich for the ruling party was a “constitutional break” and for the opposition it was the result of electoral fraud in the frustrated elections that year.

Camacho is accused of terrorism and seduction of troopsamong other crimes, and is being held in preventive detention in a prison in the highlands of Peaceat more than 4,000 meters above sea level.

This is the second time in which his preventive detention has been extended.

They have tried to break me in a thousand ways in this prison, but they are not going to succeed (…) I gave my freedom to my people because I allowed it that way.”Camacho remarked.

Along with this case, the governor has three other cases open, some for administrative issues.

Last week, Camacho was transferred to a hospital to undergo specialized studies recommended by a private medical report that established that his life was “at risk” and after seven hours he returned to prison.

The family members denied their agreement with the medical studies carried out on the opponent and expressed their fear of possible manipulation of the results by the Government.

The governor suffers from Churg-Strauss syndromean illness that causes inflammation of the blood vessels and that can cause permanent damage to the organs, which is why he needs special medication and constant medical evaluations, and also suffers from high blood pressure.

Concern about his situation arose after in a virtual hearing at the end of July he was seen much thinner and, according to his defense, with a “evident deterioration of his health”.
