A politician from President-elect Arévalo’s party is murdered in Guatemala

A politician from the party of the elected president of the Guatemala, Bernardo Arevalowas shot dead this Thursday near the border with Mexicoin circumstances that have not yet been clarified, the media and the political group itself reported.

The attack took place on a road in the indigenous town of Saint Peter Necta (west), according to local media.

The victim was identified as Aníbal Ramírezcandidate last June for administrator of the municipal corporation of that Mayan city for the Seed Movement of president-elect Arévalo.

Ramírez’s wife, who accompanied him in a truck, also died in the attack, Semilla officials confirmed in a message to the media.

The leaders said they will wait “competent authorities expand information”of crime.

The Semilla party is under investigation by the public ministry (Public Prosecutor’s Office), headed by the Attorney General Consuelo Porrasfor alleged irregularities in the registration of affiliates for its creation in 2017.

The investigations, led by the Public Ministry Rafael Curruchichewere described by the opposition Arévalo as a “coup d’etat” in progress to prevent him from taking office on January 14th.

The Public Ministry’s actions were rejected by the international community, which called for respect for the result of the second presidential round on August 20, in which Arévalo, with a strong anti-corruption message, defeated the former first lady. Sandra Torres.
