Ecuador confirms more than 100 dead in confrontation between rival gangs in Guayaquil prison

The president of Ecuador, Guillermo Lasso, declared this Wednesday a state of exception in the entire prison system, after the massacre, which left more than 100 dead, registered this Tuesday in Prison Number 1 of the city of Guayaquil (southwest), due to a confrontation between gangs of criminals.

“Declare a state of exception due to serious internal commotion in all the centers of deprivation of liberty that make up the social rehabilitation system at the national level, without any exception, for a period of 60 days from the signing of this executive decree”, is indicated in the document signed by the Head of State.

The announcement about the declaration of the exceptional measure was made after it was published on social networks that the dead in the prison riot on Tuesday amounted to about 110 and that 70 of them had been found today in pavilions 9 and 10 of the Guayaquil Penitentiary, after a search by police tactical units.
