Almagro demands that the Guatemalan Public Ministry stop persecuting Arévalo’s party

The secretary general of Organization of American States (OAS), Luis Almagrodemanded this Monday from the Public Ministry (Ministério Público) of Guatemala stop prosecuting the Seed Movement of the elected president, Bernardo Arevalo de León.

Almagro went to OAS to send a report about your recent visit to Guatemalawhere he met with Arévalo de León and representatives of the Public Ministry, who are continuing an unprecedented persecution against the Seed Movementwhich was suspended.

In front of representatives from the American continent, Almagro revealed some unprecedented details about his meeting with the Public Ministry.

Specifically, he explained that members of the Public Ministry made some presentations “very illustrative“who were”impregnated with negativity” and which have the potential to truncate the process of transferring power from the current president of Guatemala, Alejandro Giammatteito Arévalo de León.

Almagro was in Guatemala between the 4th and 6th of September and again on the 11th and 12th of this month and his visits aimed to monitor the transition process.

However, Arévalo de León announced on September 12 that he was breaking off dialogue with the Giammattei Government and suspending the transfer process after the Public Ministry gave orders to search two headquarters of the Supreme Electoral Court and review boxes containing votes.

Furthermore, Arévalo de León requested the resignation of the attorney general Consuelo Porrassanctioned by U.S for corruption and undermining democracy, as well as the prosecutor who requested the raids, Rafael Curruchicheand the criminal judge who authorized them, Fredy Orellana.

Almagro was highly critical of the performance of all these actors, although he did not mention them by name. Specifically, he spoke of “bullying”, denounced a transition process full of “political attacks” and considered that his actions seek “bypass the popular will”, without respecting what was expressed at the polls.

We ask that nothing and no one tarnish this transition process, that it be carried out in peace and tranquility, like the demonstrations that are currently taking place in Guatemala, which are demonstrations with civic responsibility, which are demonstrations with the people’s commitment to democracy“, he said.

This respect for the Constitution, for democracy, for civility, must be that of all State institutions, including the Public Ministry.“, he continued.

Almagro added that the OAS will continue to be involved in Guatemala’s transition process until January 14, 2024, when Arévalo de León is expected to take office together with the elected vice president, Karin Herrera.

Arévalo de León, whose main promise is to eradicate corruption in the State, won the Presidency for the period 2024-2028 in the second electoral round on August 20 with 2.5 million votes in his favor and surpassing his rival by 21 percentage points, the first first lady Sandra Torres Casanovafrom the National Unity of Hope (UNE).
