Deportation of Ukrainian children: Zelensky accused Russia of “genocide”

Moscow’s deportation of “tens of thousands” of Ukrainian children is “clear genocide,” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky charged at the United Nations on Tuesday, with his wife Elena Zelenskaya pleading with the international community to help return these minors forcibly taken to Russia.

“We know the names of tens of thousands of children and have evidence that hundreds of thousands more were kidnapped by Russia in the occupied territories of Ukraine and then deported,” the Ukrainian president condemned.

“We are trying to bring these children home, but time is running out. What will happen to them? In Russia they are taught to hate Ukraine and all ties with their families are severed. This is clearly genocide,” he criticized in the presence of Russia’s deputy ambassador to the UN, Dmitry Polyansky.

Russia said it shot down four Ukrainian drones in the Belgorod and Oryol regions

Russia said on Wednesday it destroyed four Ukrainian drones overnight in three attacks on the Belgorod region, bordering Ukraine, and the Oryol region, also to the west.

The Russian Ministry of Defense has not released information about possible damage or casualties at this stage.

Ukrainian attacks of this type on Russian territory, be it its capital Moscow, border regions of Ukraine or the annexed Crimean Peninsula, have become more frequent in recent months amid the counter-Kiev offensive that began in early June.

The meeting is being held at a high level and many leaders are expected to speak.

For the first time since the Russian invasion of his country began on February 24, 2022, President Zelensky will address the UN Security Council in person today.

It is unclear whether Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov will attend President Zelensky’s speech in person or will be introduced during his speech, as was already the case during the meeting of the Council of Heads of Diplomacy.
