Gaetz is a prominent figure within the House Freedom Conventiona small group of hardline Republican lawmakers who have brought the government to the brink of a shutdown with their refusal to approve new federal funds without deep spending cuts.

The group was furious when McCarthy reached an emergency deal with Democrats on Saturday night to keep the government open for another 45 days at current spending levels.

I think we need to move forward with new leadership that we can trustGaetz told CNN, but added that it was unclear whether the group could actually impeach the president, especially after McCarthy turned to Democrats to pass the bipartisan bill.

The only way that Kevin McCarthy to be Speaker of the House at the end of next week is for the Democrats to rescue him,” Gaetz said. “Now, they will probably”.

In addition to Democratic support, pro-McCarthy Republicans will work to prevent his removal from office.

The Republican Mike Lawler said Sunday on ABC’s “This Week”: “The only responsible thing was keeping the government open and funded while we completed our work”.

Had Congress failed to keep the government open, the shutdowns would have begun shortly after midnight (4 a.m. GMT Sunday) and would have delayed the salaries of millions of federal employees and military personnel.

The emergency measure gives lawmakers time to negotiate annual spending bills for the remainder of the 2024 fiscal year.
